Vegetation plays a critical role in the stability and resilience of the Collingwood Beach foreshore. Healthy dune systems protect built and natural assets, support wildlife, and contribute to the environmental, aesthetic and social values enjoyed by the whole community.
Healthy dunes rely on the growth and retention of native vegetation. Pruning or removing vegetation increases the risk of erosion, especially after storm damage. Some sections of the foreshore already have fewer established trees and sparser vegetation, making them more vulnerable to further loss. Reducing vegetation elsewhere would increase this vulnerability.
VCF has lodged a formal objection to Motion CL26.192. The motion proposes vegetation removal to “present views”, but this would weaken dune resilience, not strengthen it. The motion is unnecessary, unsupported, and inconsistent with evidence-based coastal management.
